The Perfect Venue (for us)

35 of our closest friends and family members will join us for an entire weekend on the property of Tensing Pen Resort in Negril, Jamaica. All of the cottages except for 2 will be our wedding guests. We are immensely happy with our choice and the staff has been nothing but helpful thus far.
I found the resort from a post on another blog. I can't wait to jump of the bridge like they all do!

Next items on to do list: finalize guest list, create wedding website, design & send invites, book photographer & videographer

We have a venue part I

We finally have a venue and wedding date set! YAY! 10 months after we got engaged and 10 months from when we will get married. Before I tell you about our venue I'll fill in the details about our venue hunt and the ones that weren't.
When we first got engaged it took us a while to decide where we wanted to get married. Our families live in 2 different states, we met in another, and live in a different one. The first places to be eliminated were where our families were. While the most convenient for everyone else, we didn't feel a strong connection to the midwest. We also quickly eliminated New York. NYC is VERY expensive to have a wedding in and our families would have to pay an arm and a leg to stay here.
At this point we were left with Florida, where we met. Neither one of us is fond of Miami so we knew we didn't want to get married there but our friend's family has a wonderful beach house on Captiva Island. I contacted them after a few months of being engaged. It was well over our estimated budget so it was quickly eliminated. I contacted resorts on the island after various google searches but wasn't that excited by any of them or their prices. Our search expanded to the keys and other barrier islands on the gulf but much of the same thing happened.
After a few months of fruitless searching in Florida, we expanded to more of the tropics, thank you again google and Caribbean Life and Style magazine (a genius Christmas present from my future mother in law -FMIL). Keeping track of all of these venues and their information was exhausting and difficult but a spreadsheet from google docs helped. After sifting through the dozen or so venues that sent me information back, I sat down with Ben to show him what we had. Together we decided on a couple of resorts to further contact for more information. This was based on price, location, amenities, etc. My coworker happened to travel to one of these resorts during this process as well. When she came back with glowing reviews we decided to contact this resort even more.
The venue that wasn't - Iberostar Rose Hall Beach. We were very excited to have found an all inclusive resort on the beach that has only one wedding a day. We were VERY close to booking with this resort after emailing for a couple of months when they stopped contacting me one or two emails shy of us sending in a contract. After 2 weeks of NO contact, a different person contacted me with the excuse that their email system was down. I asked her our follow up questions and waited a week for 1 of the 3 answers I needed. At the same time the group reservations desk wasn't getting back to me as well. Needless to say we feel we dodged a bullet on this one.
Up next moving on and finding a dream...

Trying on my dress

Today I went back to Saja to try on MY dress - not a sample, but my actual dress. It actually fit better than I remember and we decided it doesn't need to be hemmed. The only alteration it looks like I'll need is to tack the ribbon down. I'll go back about a month before and try it on again to make sure. I also took pictures of hair and shoes I liked with me and talked to the designer about what would look good. I have an idea of my total look for the day now! A very exciting day indeed. I'm not posting pictures of my dress but I do have them now!

Thiiiiis close

We are so close to booking our venue. We're getting some more detailed pricing information and I'm checking dates with family and friends to attempt to find the perfect weekend! We're almost a year away from the date so I actually may make my goal of booking it a year out to give everyone time to get passports in order and start saving. I can't wait to reveal the venue choice to you!

Giveaways

The wedding blog world is full of giveaways! I don't enter too many yet because we don't have any wedding details we need to fill yet but there are some that I always find to enter. The photo album sweepstakes are always entered. Even if we get an album from a photographer we could always use more to give away to family and such. I also just entered one from the Knotty Bride here. It's $100 to spend on WHATEVER at Lulu's. That's one I could always find a use for!

New Inspiration

one of our possible ceremony locations

My Christmas present from the Lindells started arriving this week. I received magazine subscriptions! My Islands & Caribbean Travel+Life are providing MANY leads in venues after our first pick fell through. Martha Stewart Weddings blog also just published a post about affordable boutique hotels. I've already heard back from one which we could possibly book out the WHOLE thing for a weekend! It MAY even fit into our budget as well! SHOCK! The problem is we may not actually have enough guests to fill it. So far I've contacted resorts all over the Caribbean but there are several on the list in Jamaica. We want to make things not only affordable for us but also for our guests. We're definitely going to get married in the early off-season so rooms & flights will be cheaper. We would also love to include a couple of meals for our guests beyond the reception.
Now I'm swimming in numbers. Every time I hear back from a venue I get a slew of prices. Each venue includes different things in their packages as well. It'll take a lot of time to wade through the options with each place!

Getting Started!

Wow! I finally contacted our dream venue today. I heard back VERY quickly (definitely before I was mentally prepared) and it is expensive, even with the friend discount. :(. I'm refusing to call it quits on this venue though. After spending my entire afternoon in turmoil over the disappointing information I finally got home and had time to do some research. I contacted a few caterers and photographers to get some pricing information. I chose these because they are our top priorities. (well the food is for both of us. Not sure how Ben feels about the photos). If we can get some reasonable prices out of them, maybe we can make it work. Here's hoping anyway...

In other news, before Christmas Ben and I had lunch with a friend of mine from high school who was visiting the city with her boyfriend. I hadn't seen her in years and really enjoyed catching up a bit and meeting her boyfriend and giving them some advice about the city. We didn't get a chance to see them again during their short visit. (By now you're probably wondering why I'm talking about this - the point is coming!) On the last day of their visit THEY GOT ENGAGED! They didn't share the news with the world (aka FaceBook) until after they returned to Florida. CONGRATS LYNN AND CHI!

They are not the only couple to get engaged since we have. One we know has already set a date before ours. No, it doesn't bother us. It kinda bothered me when people who started dating after us got engaged and married before us but now that we're engaged I could care less what other people's timelines are.

In reality it isn't happeneing all that fast. I have plenty of time to gather information and make smart decisions. Decisions that we can be happy about. Decisions that suit our needs and our budget.

If you made it this far - THANKS! I'm sure there will be plenty more rambling posts in the future but I promise I will try to balance them out with pretty things as well. I'll leave you with this:
